June Krauser inducted into Sports Hall of Fame

Broward County inducted six sports legends into its Sports Hall of Fame at the Broward County Convention Center on Tuesday, December 11, 2007.

In front of an audience of 600 guests, the six inductees took turns giving credit to parents, mentors, loved ones and Broward County, which has been their home and career launching pad.

The six were June Krauser (swimming), Earl Weaver (baseball), Ericc Rhett (football), Rick Tucci (wrestling), Greg Samuel (basketball), and Fred Turner (sports journalism).

Known as "Mother Masters," 81-year-old June Krauser is a swimming legend.

Krauser has 65 short-course and 71 long-course championships to her credit, with many of her honors coming after she turned 50.

Krauser broke 66 world records in Masters competition between the ages of 50 and 75, and she was also the first woman older than 75 to break eight minutes in the 400-meter individual medley.

Not only did Krauser excel in Masters competition, she was instrumental in founding the program in 1971. She was the first and only rules chairman for United States Masters Swimming, and she was the founder and editor of the first national newsletter, Swim Master.

Krauser was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in 1994 and was named the second recipient of the Capt. Ransom J. Arthur Award.

Krauser resides in Fort Lauderdale and has two children, Janice, bottom photo, and Larry, top photo, who are both involved with the sport.

She still competes in the South Florida Senior Games and swims laps at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex Hall of Fame pool.
