Three win 2010 Dixie Zone Open Water Championships
Ann Stewart (40-44, 1K), Ricardo Valdivia (45-49, 5K),
and Carlos Lloreda (55-59, 5K) won Dixie Zone Open Water Championships
in their respective races and age groups at the zone open water championships
in Sarasota on October 2. Valdivia was the 5K overall winner among the
75 swimmers in the event (53 men, 22 women). Dane Griffin (60-64,
5K) placed second in his age group.

Springs
Seven different GOLD relays established
new long course world records at the August 21 Coral Springs Last Chance
LCM meet where individual swims took a back seat to the incredible relay

GOLD swimmers in San Juan for LC Nationals
GOLD
was represented at the 2010 USMS Long Course Nationals August 9-12 by 27
swimmers in 149 individual events plus relays. Click HERE for GOLD results. A link on the Competition page leads to complete results.
Individual national champions were Robert Rivera (100 free, 200
free, 400 free, 800 free), Roger Stoudt (800 free, 50 back, 200
back, 200 IM), Andres Miyares (1500 free), David McIntyre
(50 free, 50 back), Alan Rapperport (800 free), David Painter
(400 IM), Dale LeClair (50 fly), Corey Welch (100 breast,
200 breast), and Pat Sargeant (100 back, 200 back, 200 IM).
Four relays won national championships: the Men's 120+ 200m Freestyle
Relay (1:39.43) of Corey Welch, Robert Rivera, Roger Stoudt, and
Luis Comulada; the Mixed 160+ 200m Medley Relay (2:02.29) of Roger
Stoudt, Corey Welch, Dale LeClair, and Pat Sargeant; the Women's
200+ Medley Relay (2:18.91) of Maureen Hughes, Debbie Cavanaugh, Dale
LeClair, and Pat Sargeant; and the Mixed 160+ 200 Free Relay
of Robert Rivera, Dale LeClair, Pat Sargeant, and Luis Comulada.
Three more relays won silver medals.
GOLD medals in Cologne, Germany, at IGLA Worlds
Fifteen GOLD swimmers swam in Cologne, Germany, for
the IGLA World Masters Championships August 1-8, and collected golden hardware,
right, in individual and relay events on just the first day of competition.
GOLD's international team consisted
of Manuel Bello (43), Justin Bullard (35), Chris Burt
(55), Peter Charlton (55), Gordon Cowley (45), Michael
Dively (72), Sean Frampton (44), Barry Gollop (55), John
Grzeszczak (52), Richard Kammerer (52), Bill Korey (47),
Robert Leipzig (56), Michael Meyer (54), Jonathan Olson
(47), and James Vaucher (27).
Open water swimmers circle Key West
Russell Harbach
competed in the 12.5-mile Swim Around Key West on June 12, swimming
in the solo division and finishing first in the 50-54 age group with a
time of 4:49:43. Harbach is at the left in the photo, posing with Brian
LaJoie at the conclusion of the race.
The mixed relay of Dale and David LeClair, Vanessa Painter,
Blaise O'Neill, and Kathleen Casey finished second in the 4-6
person relay category with a time of 4:30:06.
All's GOLDen at Open Water Festival
All seven GOLD swimmers in the 1.5K race and all three
GOLD swimmers in the 5K race medaled
in Open Water Festival Masters events held on Fort Myers Beach June 12-13.
First place age group winners in Saturday's 1.5K were John Carr (45-49)
and Bill Hanifin (50-54). Robert Declercq (30-34), Karen
Lewin (50-54), and Robin Stewart (55-59) won silver medals;
and Carlos Lloreda (55-59) and Ismael Montes (30-34) were
bronze medalists. Carr was third, Declercq sixth, and Lloreda seventh in
the men's overall.
In Sunday's 5K
race, John Carr (45-49) and Dane Griffin (60-64), left,
took gold in their respective age groups and Carlos Lloreda (55-59)
won silver. Carr was second, Griffin seventh, and Lloreda ninth in the
men's overall.
Other events in the Open Water Festival included the Florida Swimming
Open Water Junior Olympics, the Florida-Florida Gold Coast All-Star Challenge
(USA Swimming), a USA Swimming 5K Open, and an Aquathlon. (Complete Masters results)
GOLD well represented at USMS 1-mile OW Champs
Three GOLD swimmers earned two gold
medals and one silver at the June 6 USMS 1-mile Open Water National Championships
in Huntersville NC. Doug Brown is the national champion in the men's
70-74 age group, Kerri Roussain is the national champion in the
women's 50-54 age group, and Dane Griffin is the silver medal winner

Mixed 55+ relay breaks American record by over
six seconds
GOLD's 55+ Mixed 400 freestyle relay
of Craig Burns, Barb Protzman, Pat Sargeant, and David Quiggin
smashed the existing USMS record at the Last Chance to Zip It Up SCY
meet in Coral Springs on May 29 with a time of 3:53.08. The previous record
was 3:59.27.

26 GOLD swimmers medal in Atlanta at SCY Nationals
GOLD was represented at the USMS
Short Course Nationals in Atlanta on May 20-23 by 26 swimmers. Their results
are posted on the USMS web site.
Congratulations to George Schmidt for two individual national
championships (50 free and 100 IM) and three silver medals. GOLD
swimmers placing with top five finishes in individual events were Shana
Welch, Dale LeClair, Barb Protzman, Jeannie Mitchell, Ella Ackley, Corey
Welch, Robert Rivera, Doug Brown, David McIntyre, and Joseph Lammert.
USMS records fall at Y Nationals
Four USMS SCY records were shattered at the April 15-18 YMCA Masters
Nationals in Fort Lauderdale by GOLD
swimmers.
George Schmidt (60-64) broke records in the 100 IM (:59.18) and
the 200 IM (2:12.14), David Quiggin (65-69) set a new USMS record
in the 100 free (:54.23), and the 65+ 400 freestyle relay team of Quiggin,
Cav Cavanaugh, Doug Brown, and Jose Ferraz broke the old record
with a time of 4:03.39.

Schmidt breaks world record in IM
George Schmidt (60-64) broke the World Record in the 100 IM (short
course meters) at the Albatross Open in North Bethesda, Maryland, on Saturday,
March 20. His time was 1:07.80 in the 100 IM, and he also set meet records
in his other two events, the 50 free and the 200 IM.
USMS issues rules for legal swim suits
USMS issued new rules for competition swim suits and related apparel
on January 20, 2010, which are effecive immediately for all sanctioned
and recognized (including Senior Games) LCM and SCM meets. Read the new rules.
Four take top honors in Florida Open Water Championship
Series
Four GOLD swimmers won top awards
in the 2009 Florida Open Water Championship Series.
Ricardo Valdivia won his second straight Florida Open Water Championship
Series overall title. Valdivia scored a perfect 300 points with overall
first places in the Nike Swim Miami 5K, Aaron Peirsol's Race for the Oceans
5K, and the Boca Mile.
Darcy LaFountain won the women's 50-54 age group and was second
woman overall with 213 points, placing first in her age group in the Open
Water Festival 5K, the Aaron Peirsol Race for the Oceans 5K, and the Boca
Mile. She was second overall in the Boca Mile, 5th overall in the Peirsol
race, and sixth overall in the Open Water Fesival 5K.
Leticia Castro won the 45-49 age group, winning her age group
in the Nike Swim Miami 5K and placing second in her age group in the Open
Water Festival 5K and the Aaron Peirsol Race for the Oceans 5K. She placed
in the top ten overall in all three races.
Becky Willman won the 55-59 age group, winning her age group
in the Nike Swim Miami 1-mile, the Open Water Festival Mile, and the Aaron
Peirsol Race for the Oceans 1K.
